Australia and Japan are building on decades of science and technology cooperation through a new agreement focused on quantum science, technology and innovation.

The Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Quantum Science, Technology and Innovation recognises both countries global leadership in quantum science. It builds on more than 30 years of collaborative research and innovation, and supports a shared commitment to a secure, trusted and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science Senator the Hon Tim Ayres and Japan's Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy Kimi Onoda signed the MoC on 27 July 2026. 

It will encourage greater cooperation across several priority areas including:

quantum research and development

commercialisation and industry adoption

investment and venture capital connections

workforce and skills development

supply chain resilience

security, governance and standards.

As quantum technologies continue to evolve, the agreement will help connect researchers, businesses, investors and innovation ecosystems. This will unlock new opportunities for economic growth and technological advancement aligned with Australia’s National Quantum Strategy.
